How it works

From first email to finished wall

  1. Tell us about it

Send a few lines about the room or piece: size, light, colours you live with, and the feeling you are after. Photographs help.

  2. Quote and design sketch

You receive a fixed quote and an estimated date, then a design sketch. Two rounds of changes are included.

  3. Deposit

A 50% deposit books your place in the diary. The balance is due on completion, or before dispatch for panels and illustrations.

  4. Painting

Panels and illustrations are painted in the studio in Dorset. Murals are painted in place, with the space protected throughout.

  5. Finished

We photograph the finished work for our records. Your address is never shared, and copyright stays with the artist.

Every commission is quoted individually. Full terms are in our Terms, section 7.

What can be painted

Three kinds of commission

  • Murals

A whole wall or a corner of one: nurseries, bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways, garden rooms, cafés and small shops. Painted directly onto a prepared wall, with the room protected while the work is done. See the Lily Pond mural and its otter and koi details.

  • Painted panels

Paintings on oak, with the grain left to show through. Panels travel, so they suit a rented home, a gift, or a wall that cannot be painted. See Swallow.

  • Illustration

Decorative illustration on paper for a frame, a wedding, a menu or a label. Supplied as the original painting and, where agreed, as a file for print. See Gigs and Seals.

Questions

Before you ask

How much does a mural cost?

Each mural is quoted for the wall, the design and the time it needs, so there is no price list. Tell us the wall size and what you have in mind and you will get a fixed quote, with nothing added unless you ask for changes beyond the two rounds included.

Where do you paint?

The studio is in Dorset, and murals are painted in place across the county: Dorchester, Weymouth, Portland, Bridport, Sherborne, Blandford, Wareham, Swanage, Poole and Bournemouth among them. For anywhere further afield, ask: if it can be done, travel is included in the fixed quote. Panels and illustrations are posted anywhere in the UK.

How long does it take?

Your quote comes with an estimated date. Painting time depends on the size of the wall and the detail in the design, and the timescale is agreed in writing before work starts.

What do I need to do to the wall?

A sound, clean, dry wall in a plain matt emulsion is ideal. We will tell you exactly what is needed once we have seen photographs, and can recommend what to ask a decorator for.

Can I change the design?

Two rounds of changes to the sketch are included. Changes after painting begins are agreed and charged separately, as set out in the Terms.

Who owns the design?

You own the painted wall or panel. Copyright in the design stays with the artist, and a private commission is never reproduced as a print without your agreement.
